Asian Justices Convene Regional Forum on the Environment.
On July 5-6, 2007, senior justices from Australia , India , Indonesia , the Philippines , Sri Lanka , Thailand , and the United States convened a regional forum in Manila , Philippines to exchange views on the role of the judiciary in environmental protection, and to promote regional cooperation. During the two-day meeting, Asian justices shared first-hand experience on developing court policies and practices on environmental adjudication and capacity strengthening. The Supreme Court of the Philippines also presented plans for establishing environmental benches within trial courts to ensure more effective adjudication of environmental cases. Justice Reynato S. Puno, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines chaired the forum. The judicial forum was organized under the auspices of the AECEN, which promotes adoption of improve court policies and practices throughout Asia .
