PHILIPPINES PREPARES TO ESTABLISH ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE ASSISTANCE CENTER.
On March 30, 2007, the Philippines' Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), in coordination with the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN), organized an inception workshop on the establishment of compliance assistance center/s in the Laguna de Bay area. Laguna de Bay is a major freshwater lake in Metro Manila and the Southern Tagalog region. Workshop participants included personnel from LLDA and representatives from the pig farm, slaughterhouse, gasoline station, and fast food sectors. Speakers presented information on environmental compliance assistance based on materials provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and their application to the local situation. LLDA presented the status of compliance for the four represented sectors. Each group identified challenges they face in complying with environmental laws, and recommendations to address these challenges. After the workshop, representatives from LLDA and AECEN discussed the results of the workshop and their implications on the planned compliance assistance centers.
