| AECEN Study Tour Enables Philippines and Thailand to Explore Strategies for Establishing Compliance Assistance Centers for Hog Farms and Slaughterhouses. On July 23-27, 2007, the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN) and the Council of Agriculture (COA) of Taiwan organized an observational program to Taiwan for five delegates from Thailand and the Philippines. The program is part of AECEN’s support to the Pollution Control Department (PCD) of Thailand and the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) of the Philippines in their efforts to establish compliance assistance centers for the swine sector and the slaughterhouse industry in the respective countries. Participants discussed various approaches in promoting and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, as well as strategies for establishing and implementing compliance assistance programs and activities for the swine sector and slaughterhouse industry. Participants met with the Swine Association of Taiwan and local swine associations in the counties of Changhua and Yunlin, and shared approaches for encouraging and assisting members on environmental compliance concerns. Participants also visited selected model hog farms, a slaughterhouse and the Taiwan Livestock Research Institute to learn about workable practices and successful efforts in wastewater and solid waste management.
