AECEN Assists Indonesia in Assessing Current Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Programs.
On July 30, 2007, the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia (MOE), in partnership with the Indonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL), conducted a “National Workshop on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement” in Jakarta. The workshop was co-organized with the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN). Eighty representatives from the MOE, Department of National Police, Attorney General’s Office, courts and non-governmental organizations participated in the workshop. Participants discussed the results of the AECEN-supported rapid assessment of the state of environmental compliance and enforcement programs in Indonesia, and provided input and validated information and recommendations for the finalization of the assessment report. Key recommendations included details on the One Roof Enforcement System, strong coordination among concerned agencies and strengthening environmental adjudication. The assessment report will be finalized by ICEL this month based on the comments and suggestions of the participants. The assessment report will also serve as the basis for identifying priority programs of MOE. At the end of the workshop, MOE launched the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network of Indonesia, which aims to provide a venue for sharing information and coordination of various agencies and individuals involved in compliance and enforcement work. Twenty-five organizations surveyed responded positively in becoming members of the network. |
