AECEN Assists the Central Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka to Implement Wastewater Discharge Fee System.

On August 16, 2007, the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) of Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the USAID Environmental Cooperation-Asia (ECO-Asia) program, through the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN), to cooperate on a program to implement a Wastewater Discharge Fee (WDF) system. The CEA Chairman emphasized that the proposed WDF system was long overdue and that AECEN support will now enable the CEA to accelerate the process for establishing a wastewater discharge fee system to counter water pollution from industrial sources. AECEN will assist in formulating the enabling laws, regulations and procedures for the effective implementation of the WDF. Next steps include establishing a working group and engaging international and local experts to draft the legal and regulatory reforms.
