Delhi metro rail Construction: 14 sites fined for violating pollution rules

As many as 14 construction sites of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have been found violating the prescribed norms to keep dust pollution in check and they have been asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 each, the Delhi government said Wednesday.

Challans have also been issued to 42 other construction sites along with contractors of the metro sites, said Public Works Department Minister Satyendar Jain.

The afforestation drive to compensate for around 1,400 trees cut for Kochi Metro project has left environmentalists seething with anger since neither Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) nor Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is willing to complete the onerous task.

Officials of both agencies blamed the other for the state of affairs, with neither agency owning up responsibility for planting and tending of 10 times the number of tree saplings.
