Builders violating green norms face the heat

With high-rises popping up across the city, the State government’s environment watchdog is tightening screws on builders.

The State-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), which scrutinises the potential effects on the environs of the city of projects that exceed 20,000 sq. m in built-up area, has identified more than 25 projects that have violated their conditions. Officials said while 10 of them have been taken to court, the process to file charges in the civil court is in the final stages for the remaining violators.

Greens Cry Foul Over Circular on Ordinary Sand Mining

KOLLAM: Greens are crying foul over a recent circular issued by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, making Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) mandatory for mining or extraction of ordinary sand in the state. According to them, the circular is mute over sand mining from areas of less than 5 hectares and may miss the target which it desires to hit.

New norms for environmental clearance

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has recently reconstituted the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) for the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The project proponents seeking environmental clearance either from the MoEF&CC for Category ‘A’ projects or from the SEIAA of Puducherry for Category ‘B’ projects covered under Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006 need to apply online only.

With effect from March 1, 2016, no manual application will be entertained.

Online green nod system on the blink

The Online Submission and Monitoring of Environmental Clearance (OSMEC), a system designed to speed up the approval of projects, has been held up in Kerala due to the delay in providing the necessary infrastructure.

In July, Union Minister for Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar had launched the State portal for the OSMEC. But four months later, the online platform for projects requiring approval from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) remains bogged down.
