Protect forests, DPM tells Xayaboury officials

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of social and cultural affairs, Mr Asang Laoly, has asked Xayaboury provincial authorities to suppress any activity that harms or degrades protected and preserved forest areas.

Mr Asang, on a working visit to the northern province from September 22-23, told provincial and district authorities to take positive action to thoroughly investigate and address issues regarding logging, according to official sources from the Government Office.

Thailand: PCD needs time to restore affected villages

PCD's measures to rehabilitate the cadmium-affected villages would cost Bt438 million.

Its appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court follows a decision by the Phitsanulok Administra-tive Court last month ordering the National Environmental Board (NEB) and PCD to declare the Mae Tao River Basin as an environmentally protected area within 90 days.

PCD director-general, Wichien Jungrungruang, said his department could not work within this period to designate the cadmium-affected villages as environmentally protected zones because many procedures were required for the zone designation.

The recommendation by the Supreme Court-appointed central empowered committee (CEC) to carve out only a one km to 100 m wide buffer zone for protected areas has upset environmental activists, who alleged that it was too insignificant for conservation of the state's rich floral and faunal biodiversity.
