Command centre to fight illegal deforestation

A command centre, under the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, will be set up to manage and patrol forest areas to deter unscrupulous people from clearing land here.

“We will streamline and have a systematic approach to patrol the forest areas to try to catch and stop people from burning and cutting down trees,” ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Zoal Azha Yusoff told the media yesterday.

Earlier, he accompanied minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel on a visit to a site that had been cleared in Lojing, Kelantan.

Mahaweli Authority denies illegal clearing of forest lands

The Mahaweli Authority yesterday refuted allegations by environmentalists that it was engaging in unlawful clearing of forest lands, and challenged anyone to prove there was illegal activity on its part.

Speaking to The Nation, Director General of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, Gamini Rajakaruna, stressed all forest clearing activities that his officials were engaging in as part of development efforts of the Mahaweli zones, were ‘strictly in accordance with the law’.

The recent land clearing activities at Mount Santubong for the proposed cable car project might negatively impact the surrounding environment and hence the tourism sector.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk James Dawos Mamit said yesterday his ministry was “uncomfortable” about the illegal land clearing as the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and project feasibility were not yet concluded when clearing work started.
