Bt21 billion to be sought for Klong Dan

Some 14 politicians and civil servants - former and current - will be required to pay more than Bt21 billion in total compensation to the state over losses caused by the Klong Dan wastewater treatment plant, according to a Finance Ministry plan.

The former politicians include Vatana Asavahame, a former deputy interior minister, and the late former minister of science, technology and environment Yingpan Manasikarn.

Vatana is now on the run.

Makati suspends anti-smoke belching operations

DUE to mounting complaints from motorists over alleged cases of extortion, the Makati city government suspends its anti-smoke belching operations.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay on Tuesday ordered the suspension of the operations of the Makati Pollution and Control Office (MPCO) also because of the failure of its enforcers to comply with the implementing guidelines of the local vehicle emission code and the Clean Air Act or Republic Act 8749.

Binay has directed the Office of the City Administrator, headed by Atty. Eleno Mendoza, to conduct a thorough investigation of the complaints.

Demands to Scrutinize Forestry Crimes

An antigraft watchdog has urged Indonesian law enforcement institutions to strengthen their fight against crimes in the nation’s forestry sector.

The call came after Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) released a report that showed potential state losses from such crimes totaling Rp 691 trillion ($62 billion) between 2011 and 2012.

Lalola Estele, a researcher with ICW, said the total losses had been calculated from 124 cases of forest crimes recorded by the watchdog from 2011 to 2012.

FORMER Mayor Florencio “Jun” Bernabe of Parañaque City and four showbiz personalities-turned city councilors are facing graft charges before the Office of the Ombudsman for approving a proposal to develop more than 100 hectares of reclaimed land in Manila Bay.
Now in hot water are councilors Venesa Alma Moreno-Salic, Jason Webb, Val Sotto and Roselle Nava after a group of residents of the city filed a letter-complaint assailing the agreement with Avesco Marketing Corp. for the implementation of a project that might allegedly cause irreparable damage to the environment.
