527 projects waiting for environmental clearances: Centre

Over 500 projects in various sectors are pending for environmental clearances, the Lok Saha was informed today.

"The number of projects under consideration in the Ministry for Environmental clearances are 527. The proposals are processed for approval as per the provisions under the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006. These projects are accorded approval within the stipulated time frame and after receiving requisite document from the Project Proponent and state government," Union Environment minister Prakash Javadekar told the Lok Saha in a written reply.

Builders violating green norms face the heat

With high-rises popping up across the city, the State government’s environment watchdog is tightening screws on builders.

The State-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), which scrutinises the potential effects on the environs of the city of projects that exceed 20,000 sq. m in built-up area, has identified more than 25 projects that have violated their conditions. Officials said while 10 of them have been taken to court, the process to file charges in the civil court is in the final stages for the remaining violators.

Coal tar units without EC to be shut down: Green Tribunal

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has made it clear that any coal tar processing unit operating in the country without clearance from State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) or Environment Ministry shall cease its operations till it obtains the requisite permission.

A bench headed by Justice P Jyothimani, however, made it clear that if a unit does not fall within the purview of the 2006 Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, which provides for environment clearance (EC) requirement, it shall not be prohibited from operating.
