Laos vows to limit dam impacts

The head of Laos’ ruling party reportedly pledged to limit the downstream impacts of the controversial Don Sahong hydropower dam in his meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen in Vientiane on Saturday.

According to a Cambodian state television report covering the visit, the Cambodian premier raised the issue during the meeting and asked his counterpart to do everything he can to ensure “sustainable” water use.

The Lao government is forging ahead with the construction of the massive Don Sahong dam, close to the tri-border area with Thailand and Cambodia, within the next few weeks. The dam is yet another large-scale project being undertaken by Vientiane to make Laos "the battery of Southeast Asia". Under the programme, Laos intends to become a serious electricity exporter to its neighbours. This may happen. But what is already certain to happen is that the projects will disrupt the Mekong River and affect the people of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand like never before.

Green Light for Mekong ‘Time Bomb’ Sparks Alarm

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Environmental groups have expressed alarm at the Laotian National Assembly’s approval last week of the concession for the Don Sahong Dam project, which has been described as an “ecological time bomb” about to be dropped on the Mekong River.

The Laotian government and the project’s developer, Malaysia’s MegaFirst Corporation Berhad, must postpone construction until further impact assessments are conducted, the World Wildlife Fund’s Cambodia office said in a statement.

Hun Sen Dismisses Reports on Don Sahong Dam Construction

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Prime Minister Hun Sen has dismissed reports that Lao PDR has commenced construction of the giant 360MW Don Sahong Hydro Dam project.

“I have heard that Laos has commenced construction of this dam with laborers hired from China and Vietnam. There is no evidence to support this,” the prime minister was quoted as saying at Friday’s cabinet meeting.
