Farglory shopping mall fined NT$6 million for fourth pollution offense

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Farglory Group's (遠雄企業集團) shopping mall was fined NT$6 million for discharging wastewater into a creek for the fourth time on record, local authorities said on Monday.

A 100-meter sheet of white foam was found floating in the Kanggaokeng Creek (康誥坑溪) in New Taipei City last Wednesday, according to New Taipei City's Environmental Protection Department (環保局).

Local authorities said they traced the waste to Farglory's iFG Shopping Mall (遠雄購物中心), where foam had spilled from a wastewater tank into a discharge system intended for rainwater.

Oil recycling plant closed

An illegal oil reprocessing factory in Taoyuan’s Guanyin District (觀音), which is estimated to have processed more than 1 million tonnes of waste engine oil while illicitly discharging untreated wastewater into nearby waterways for the past decade, has been uncovered and shut down by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA).

CPC fuel oil spills into Taipei streets, rivers

State-run oil refiner CPC Corp, Taiwan (CPC, 台灣中油) received three separate fines totaling NT$9 million (US$275,351) after an underground pipe ruptured in New Taipei City’s Sijhih District (汐止) on Monday, spilling oil in several rivers.

The pipe, which carries boiler fuel oil, ruptured near Jhongsing Road in Sijhih, covering nearby roads with oil. Several motorcyclists were reportedly injured after slipping on the oil.

The New Taipei City Environmental Protection Department said it has cleaned up 630,000 liters of oil in Tsaolan Creek (草濫溪) and Neikou Creek (內溝溪) so far.

Changhua proposes to limit pollution by electroplating plants

The Changhua County Government on Wednesday proposed measures to control pollutants in the catchment areas of two major irrigation canals, amid reports of soil pollution allegedly caused by the illegal discharge of effluent by local electroplating plants.
