Bangaldesh: Experts okay open pit mining

A committee of experts, formed by the government, yesterday submitted its report on suitable coal mining method in Bangladesh to the energy and mineral resources ministry, suggesting open pit mining in Phulbari coal deposit as a practical approach.

The 17-member committee, headed by former Petrobangla chairman Mosharraf Hossain, also suggested undertaking a small open pit mine project in the untapped northern part of Bangladesh's lone coal mine in Barapukuria.

Power Division move for setting up Rampal plant sans EIA clearance

Before getting the environmental impact assessment (EIA) clearance, the Power Division has moved to get approval from the Cabinet Economic Affairs Committee for signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy electricity from the proposed power plant near the Sundarbans, reports UNB.

The Bangladeshi state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) and the Indian state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have agreed to jointly develop the plant in very environmentally sensitive area in Bangladesh following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Dhaka and New Delhi in 2010.
