The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday directed the State government to make sure that the silt and sand removed from the Srivaikundam dam during the process of desilting is sold strictly in accordance with the terms of the contract.
Following allegations of excessive removal of sand from the dam, the tribunal comprising judicial member Justice P. Jyothimani and expert member R. Nagendran said that public shall lodge such complaints in the police station concerned and directed Superintendent of Police of Tuticorin to investigate them under his direct supervision.
Based on a petition filed by S. Joel, a local functionary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, the tribunal had ordered desliting of the Srivaikundam dam on July 1.
The National Green Tribunal also constituted a five-member committee comprising senior Communist Party of India leader R. Nallakannu, Commissioner of State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority and social activist S. Nainar Kulasekaran, advocate Thavasi Rajan and S.M.A. Gandhimathinathan of Srivaikundam Anaineer Pidipu Kulangal Paathukaapu Sangam to monitor the desilting process.
