Penang government denies Penaga mangrove forest set to make way for development

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has refuted a report that a mangrove forest at Penaga on the mainland has been earmarked for development.

State Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin said the area was for a aquaculture project instead.

He said the area has been gazetted by the state as an Aquaculture Industrial Zone (AIZ) which will be developed to ensure food security.

He however stressed studies were still being conducted and shot down allegations land clearing activities have already begun.
