Housing project threat to river basin ecology

HA NOI (VNS) — A Vietnamese environmental watchdog group has reiterated its call for the permanent shutdown of a large residential project in Dong Nai province, just north of HCM City.

The Viet Nam River Network said the 8.4 hectares project would damage adjacent Dong Nai River, blocking natural flows and drainage of floodwater and triggering erosion of the river's bank.

The project also creates danger to waterway traffic and encroaches on public areas, the group said.

Dong Nai slow to move polluters from suburbs

DONG NAI (VNS) — A plan to move nearly 480 production and husbandry units causing pollution out of urban and residential areas in the southern province of Dong Nai has been sluggish, failing to meet its deadline this year.

The provincial People's Committee issued the decision to remove the units in August 2012, setting a date for completion in 2014. But the province had to extend the deadline to the end of this year.
